Marine field stations regain their strong brand names

News: Jul 19, 2019

Marine field stations / research stations of University of Gothenburg have got new names, decided by Vice-Chancellor Ewa Wiberg. Kristineberg Marine Research Station and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory are the new names.

The marine infrastructure of University of Gothenburg – the larger research vessel Skagerak and the field stations Kristineberg and Tjärnö – were combined 2008 under the name The Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences (short form the Lovén Centre). In 2016 the name was changed to Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure.

Unfortunately the well-established names and the strong brand names of the two field stations / research stations Tjärnö and Kristineberg also diminished. The name the Lovén Centre has caused confusion and uncertainties in many ways. Since 2016 this has been discussed, which 2019-06-27 led to the following Vice-Chanceller decisions:

  • Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure changes name to The Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg.
  • Names of the three units will be Kristineberg Marine Research Station (in Swedish Kristinebergs marina forskningsstation), Tjärnö Marine Laboratory (Tjärnö marina laboratorium) and R/V Skagerak.

Short forms will be Kristineberg and Tjärnö Laboratory (in Swedish Tjärnölaboratoriet).

Vice-Chancellor has also decided that the directorship for The Marine Infrastructure at the University of Gothenburg is rotating annually among the units' station managers. Peter Tiselius, station manager at Kristineberg, has been appointed the first director. In summer of 2020 the directorship is planned to pass over to Kerstin Johannesson at Tjärnö.

Website updating, revision of signs etc. will be done during 2019.
